The Tramping Camp
of the
1st Dundee Troop Boy Scouts
July 1911

This is an account of the "Tramping Camp" of the 1st Dundee Troop Boy Scouts that took place in 1911. It is taken from a hand-written diary made by one of the participants. The original book contains pen sketches drawn directly into the diary, presumably, by the narrator's brother Jack Edwards.
The 1st Dundee Troop was formed in 1908, the year that the Boy Scout movement was founded, so this trek must be one of the earliest recorded. The scoutmaster of the troop was my grandfather, Mr James Shaw. I have a photograph of him with the Lieutenant-General Sir R.S.S. Baden-Powell, inspecting the 1st Dundee Troop Boy Scouts at Dudhope Castle, Dundee as part of a visit in 1910.
